Sept. 15 Membership Meeting

President’s report - Andy Sarkisian

After the wettest month of May on record, summer is finally here. Yards are green, boats are in the water, and Lake Sherwood is abuzz with activity. A fellow golfer inquired last week about the

Association's priorities and projects. Our priorities are very simple this year – improve our lake water quality (I.e., weed control), maintain our commons areas, finish our bridge improvement projects, sort through your responses to this year's membership survey to prioritize development of proposals for new projects, be financially responsible, and have fun.

As announced at the April General Membership meeting, we are well on our way toward better aquatic weed control with our fluridone permit. Many thanks are owed to Nanette Winowiecki and Linda Tucker for their diligence. The rains in May were a good news/bad news event – good because water levels are high; bad in that it diluted our chemicals. Fear not as there is a process for supplemental treatment. The dam, under the watchful eye of Jerry Trzaskos , did its job and is in good condition thanks to some upgraded boards that were installed by Harry Tucker and Peter Allen, and thanks to an improved sea wall that was installed under Sandy Weber 's supervision.

In terms of the Canada goose population, we have our permit for this year's round-up. Please plan to join the fun on June 19th. (See Shelley Fiore’s report on page 25) I can't make any promises, but a certain reporter from the Detroit News may join us this year.

The Ledgewood Bridge project is now complete and in the hands of Mother Nature as we watch our new plants grow. The start and completion of the Commerce Bridge project is our priority this year. The permitting process, an early Winter, and wet Spring precluded the commencement of this project. Given the time lag and typical contractor issues, we are in the process of re-quoting the project. Your patience is greatly appreciated, and supplemental project managers are welcome.

In last year's membership survey, you were clear that you would like to see an improvement in our Association entrance signs and would like a bike path added to Commerce Road . In this year's survey, we followed-up with questions about the type of improvement for the entrance signs. You clearly told us new signs at the far East and West ends of the Association would be insufficient. We have more work to do in developing specific proposals for upgrades to the existing signs. We also have more work to do in coordinating the plans for a bike path with the Township. Energetic volunteers are needed to help progress both the sign improvement plans and bike path plans. Please contact me if you can help.

The results of this year's survey are posted in this edition of the VIEW. Clearly, you'd like the lake to be quieter and safer at night, and you'd like us to further explore a card entry system for the boat ramp… if the system can provide security against unwanted boat launches. You also want limits or complete restrictions on guest boats.

Overall, we received about 445 responses to the survey. You are fantastic! Most marketers would be happy with a 5 to 10% response rate. You gave us a 70% response rate! Although not anticipated when we drafted the survey last February, I have also heard many people ask

about improving our roads. Essentially all of the roads in the eastern section of the Association took a beating. In some areas, the annual cold patches are piling up. Page 7 of the last edition of the View gave instructions on how to contact the Road Commission. If we want the roads to be completely re-surfaced, a Special Assessment District process is required wherein a majority of the land owners need to sign a petition. If you feel strongly about resurfacing our roads, a group of citizens are needed to embark on the S.A.D. petition process.

I'd like to close with a few reminders. Please observe the no wake rules in all canals. Given our high water levels, we need to be more sensitive to the shore erosion that can be caused by your boat wake. Also, please observe our no glass container rule at all of our commons areas. It simply is a matter of common sense in a lake community with bare-footed children.

And last, we know water balloon fights have become a Fourth of July tradition. Out of respect for the people who spend many hours decorating their boat for the parade and in regards to personal safety, we are asking all water fights on the Fourth of July to be contained in the boat ramp bay and to be restricted to 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM. Simply, water balloon fights during the boat parade is a disaster waiting to happen as combatants jump into the water to retrieve unbroken balloons in front of boat traffic. Have a safe and fun Summer!

Rosanna enjoys waterskiing and gardening.

Frank and Holly Kunick

Random Acts of Kindness

Gepper Family saved LSA picnic table.

Acting on their skills from Cub and Boy Scouts is probably what makes the Gepper family of

Triwood so quick to help! Always there in a time of need and when common sense is your foremost

thought, the Gepper family was quick to remove a

picnic table submerged in the lake this winter

between SunsetIsland and the Driftwood A-lot. The

lake wasn't thawed completely when the family

trekked to retrieve the fairly new picnic table. They

purchased a chain and lock to fasten it to a tree. Thanks so much for taking the initiative in a timely manner to prevent the table's damage and a

potential, sinking prop destroyer! Your work did not

go unnoticed.

Matt Klepack Takes Action

On Wednesday, June 2nd at about 2:45pm, my next door neighbor came knocking on my door. He saw a pontoon boat floating in the bay and he knew who it belonged to but couldn't get to it to return it to them. I called the neighbor who he said that it belonged to and she said that it was theirs. I told her that we would bring it to them. I took Matt out on our boat and we brought the pontoon boat down to the neighbor's house where it belonged. After a few tries and the neighbor's friend helping us, we managed to return it to their dock. The reason I think this is a random act of kindness on my next door neighbor's part was because, first of all, he is 15 years old (16 at the end of June) and second of all, he was going to be participating in a fishing tournament, had to leave at 4:00 and still had preparations to make for that. He saw the boat floating down the bay and was concerned that it would hit something and cause damage to the boat or other neighbor's personal property. I would hope that other 15 year old's would do what Matt Klepack did, but Matt took the time out to "rescue" Bob and Ruth Mechigian's pontoon

boat. Submitted by: Lisa Tamm

Sandy Riss praised

Thanks for the thoughtfulness and green thumb of my hard-working neighbor Sandy Riss for providing some TLC to my perennial garden. I sure appreciate it!

“Pray For Our Leaders and Our Troops”

The Banner at the corner of Commerce and Driftwood I told my brother, Dave Lammers before he left for Iraq that I wanted to make a banner of him. I never thought it would be a year before I would have it up. I also did not know I would be adding my brother Dan. Dave, a specialist in the U S Army has been serving in Iraq for a year. He was due to come home in May but is there on “911” with thousands of other troops, to go if needed to various parts of Iraq . He misses his wife

and two kids, who are currently in the states for the summer. He has a heart of gold and enjoys encouraging his comrades and his Iraqi friends, telling them the truths about God.

Dan, my youngest brother, is a captain in the U S Marines. A guy of great morals and integrity, he volunteered to go over in February of this year. My older brother Peter, who lives in Ypsilanti , calls him a straight arrow. He loves being a Marine and is proud to serve his country. (The marine website is a great place to get current news of events in Iraq is www.usmc.mil).

Although it has been difficult, knowing they are in harms way, I have learned to rely on my God and trust his sovereignty over their lives. Getting together once a week to pray with two girlfriends of mine is a great encouragement to me. We started praying for our husband’s businesses but ended up praying for so much more! We know God hears our prayers. He is such a good, kind God. I hope people will desire to know God more. Each week we pray for the situation in Iraq , especially for wisdom, intuition and a blanket of protection for our soldiers (they of course have a special place in our hearts along with my brothers). We also pray for our president and his cabinet, Iraqi leadership and current events. Praying for our leaders and our troops is one way I know I can support our great country and my brothers.

Dave and Dan know I have a banner with their pictures on it in my front yard. I keep in touch with them through emails and regularly send packages full of goodies. They know my family and I are behind them 100%. When those who are part of our military see the banner, I hope they are encouraged that they have strong support. My brothers represent all the soldiers serving our country. I am proud of my brothers and our military. I am proud to be an American and I hope others will feel proud to be an American too and not be afraid to show it.

Detroit News Article on Area Goose Problem - Published March 16, 2004

“Metro area geese fight intensifies; Population control, relocation considered”
Mike Martindale , Darren A. Nichols & Oralander Brand-Williams; Morris Richardson Ii. (article edited for space……)

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP — Homeowners have had it with geese — especiallythe calling cards that soil their lawns, patios, driveways and lakes, and may even contaminate their drinking water. It’s hard to believe that just 30 years ago experts thought the giant Canada goose — Brana canadenis maxima — was dying out in this state. Now, more than 300,000 of the big messy birds call Michigan home, transforming manicured lawns and pastoral lakeside homes into a man-versus-goose battleground. The winner has yet to be determined…….. These days, homeowners and municipalities are working to rid themselves of the mess. ……. Andy Sarkisian , president of the Lake Sherwood association, representing 627 homeowners in

Commerce, said a combination of nest destruction and roundups has depleted a goose population on his lake”……. “We’ve been doing the roundup for many years,” said Sarkisian. “Without natural predators to control their population, they can cause trouble. They don’t attack people, but they love to come up on land to feed and then to, er, reverse feed. It doesn’t make for a very nice lake environment for children or adults who want to go in the water.” …... To get the geese moved, applicants need signatures from 70 percent of all lakefront owners or a single resolution from their local government body stating there is no opposition to the effort. Tim Payne , southeastern Michigan wildlife supervisor for the state Department of Natural Resources, said each year about 200 relocation permit requests are granted by the DNR to municipalities across southeast Michigan . ……. About a dozen private contractors round up the geese and relocate them to Iowa , the only one left of 13 states that accepted Michigan ’s surplus geese. “It’s possible after next

year, when ( Iowa ) has established its own population, they won’t want any more taken there,” Payne said. Paul Muelle , chief of natural resources for the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority, believes lots of geese in small bodies of water could be a health hazard. …...“You don’t want to alarm the public, but they (geese) should be kept from shorelines and beaches in large numbers,” he said. “It just makes sense.”

  • If it's not posing a problem, leave it alone, enjoy it and let nature take its course. Eggs will hatch within 28 days. * After the hatching, take steps to discourage further nesting the following March, such as removing or covering a favored area.
  • If a goose becomes overly aggressive and could pose a safety problem, call (734) 953-0241 for removal advice. The DNR will recommend private contractors who can take careof the problem safely and humanely.
  • Visit the DNR's Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnr for information.

Geese can be hunted in the fall and winter, but geese are otherwise protected under both state and federal laws. It is unlawful to round up and relocate the birds without a permit.

Shelley Fiore - Goose Round Up
Goose Round-Up Volunteers Needed!

The round up is scheduled for Saturday June 19th from 6:00 AM- 7:30 AM . We still need several volunteers with boats. Please call or email me ASAP to volunteer! You do not need any experience.

Training takes about 3 minutes and can be done over the phone. We don't touch the geese, we don't hurt the geese. All we do is herd the geese to a pen that is set up on the Driftwood beach where professionals are waiting to take them to the Department of Natural Resources office where they will then be relocated to a different state where they will spend the summer. Some of them will find their way back to Lake Sherwood by the fall, but the round-up helps us to have a substantial portion of the summer free of the mess and aggression of the geese. If you don't already have other more pressing plans for that morning, (come on, how can you, at 6:00 AM ?) please contact me to volunteer.. It really is a beautiful way to spend the morning and we really do need the help!

Thanks in advance for all you who will be there!

FEATURED NEIGHBOR Gary Bancer

Article written by Cathy Brush

Introducing this month’s Featured Neighbor………Gary Bancer of Deerwood Lane. Gary has lived in LakeSherwood for almost three years along with his wife, Carol and three daughters, Lexi, Tori, and Karly. The Bancers didn’t move far when they relocated from Lakewood Village on LakeNeva in WhiteLakeTownship. Gary, an electrical engineer at Delphi, not only has a love for lake living, but a passion for clean water. He combined his two areas of interest and developed a wet sediment catch basin next to their home that collects rainwater from 4 storm drains as well as the gutter run off from the neighbor’s house. When the Bancer’s moved in, the existing culvert was overgrown and hardly accessible. Gary spent the first summer clearing out the overgrown foliage and debris.

The following summer he applied his engineering talent and developed a tiered drainage system that uses barrier fencing along with soil to filter out the pollutants , phosphates and heavy metals that pour into our Lake as the result of sediment carried by the water run off. Once a year he removes the phosphorous rich sediment and uses it to enhance his flowerbeds. Adjacent to the drain, he has created a beautiful “park like” setting in his yard filled with wild flowers that he has

collected, which also act as erosion control.

Gary has also put a “bubbler system” in the Lake in front of his home for aeration to further improve the water quality. He even spends his own time and resources cleaning the

sediment out of storm drains in the street. He hopes his enthusiasm will be contagious and it will encourage other neighbor’s to “adopt a drain” like he did. Gary has offered to assist anyone who is interested in setting up a similar system to help minimize the aging process of our Lake, which is already at an extremely high phosphate level.

Very little materials are needed for this project, like large pieces of broken concrete and soil erosion fencing. If you have any concrete you would like to donate, or are interested in building or

seeing the drain, feel free to contact Gary at 248-676- 8964. Thanks Gary, for your commitment to a cleaner environment!

Vice President’s Report - Linda Tucker

2004-2005 Riparian Guide : The 2003 Fed. Clean Water Act mandated local communities to follow clean water BMP’s ( B est M anagement P ractices) as well as educate residents on BMP’s. Lake Sherwood was instrumental in passing a township non-phosphorous fertilizer ordinance, sponsored a township resident education class, and now we will be a leader in publishing BMP’s to our residents; thus the Riparian Book. The original draft only included storm water run-off information. However, residents really wanted answers to lake water level and weed control. So the book was revised to address these type issues and still convey the importance for pollution controls using reasonable BMP methods. After the “ Lake ” section is a “Land” section (LSA greenbelt location/uses, trash pick up, twp ordinances).

Martha Klemmer ’s Welcome Book Information was added (schools/government offices, By- Laws, Deed Restriction, and a list of local restaurants, stores, parks, and golf courses.) A “Member” listing by property address was included; however at the 2004 April membership meeting it was decided to remove the phone numbers. The pages are peppered with helpful tips, suggestions, and even a few historical items and it’s all enclosed with beautiful Lake Sherwood pictures from Al Catania . Thank you Al. I never imagined this book would take a year to complete. I didn’t realize there was a lot of detail to consider right down to the advertisement pages and getting it to the printer. I had quotes from eight different printers and decided to go with Office Max ; their Corporate Account Manager emailed me, crunched the price so the book was under budget (including extra copies for new residents), and came out to the house to finalize the 120 pages to disk.

Each of you should have received your copy by now, as the books were given to area representatives for distribution. I hope everyone will take time to read it and will learn something from its pages. And, by all means, send me your comments. Please update Page 44 of your Riparian Book, last item, with the name and phone number of our new trash company - Republic Waste Services at 877-264-5544. (For more information on the new trash service, see Glenn Short’s report - Commerce Twp. Waste Services on Page 43.)

2004 DEQ Aquatic Weed Treatment Permit : April 19 th DEQ approved Fluridone treatment for our lake. See Nanette Winowiecki’s Q&A article on Page 65. Natural Habitat Proposal : What happened to the Natural Habitat Proposal that was started last year for the Ford peninsula, Sunset Island , and Jungle Island ? The original proposal was to be voted on at the January

(February) membership meeting. I announced that according to our by-laws, two proposal notices must be made before allowing a vote. However, since this was not a “by-law”, the two-notice policy didn’t apply. I then requested a second notice because a vote for re-deeding property should have the same procedure as a bylaw. After discussion and some meeting protocol confusion (we are all volunteers and sometimes we don’t do things perfect), the membership decided to allow a second notice and defer the vote to the April meeting. We know that many attendees took time from their busy schedules to attend the February meeting for this vote, only to have it deferred to the next membership meeting; however, on the plus side, the additional time brought forth new information. Between February and April it was realized that Sunset Island is part of an “outlot” that includes most of the Driftwood bay area and all of Higgins Island; and since Higgins Island was not being included and the property wasn’t being subdivided, Sunset Island was disqualified as a candidate as a Natural Habitat. More importantly, we became aware that making any of our greenbelt Natural Habitat would jeopardize getting a DEQ chemical permit. DEQ’s position is always to seek natural weed control instead of chemicals, especially if adjacent to any wetlands or natural habitats. Since our lake is a shallow man-made lake and is naturally weedy, we would definitely not want to eliminate our option to chemically treat our lake. So at the April board meeting, it was proposed that we “table” the Natural Habitat Proposal indefinitely. This procedure prevented the proposal from going to a vote and being voted down, (based on the DEQ permit issue), possibly giving the impression that residents didn’t want a natural habitat.

Have a safe fun-filled summer and hope to see you waterskiing on the lake.

Commerce Township Improves Waste Services

Beginning the week of July 5, 2004 , Commerce Township along with Republic Waste Services will implement a new and improved solid waste collection program utilizing Curb Carts . Residents will start receiving their 96-gallon, wheeled Curb Carts on the week of June 14, 2004 and should begin using the new Cart on their newly designated trash collection day starting the week of July 5, 2004 .

There may be times when residents have more trash than the Curb Cart will hold. In this case a resident may place this additional waste in trash cans/bags. You may continue to use your old refuse containers for solid waste collection or yard waste collection provided that it is properly identified and is no larger than 32 gallons in size and is not heavier than 50 lbs. Items that do not fit into the curb cart However, Republic requests call in advance so that they can dispatch the appropriate equipment. Please call Republic Waste Services at (877) 264-5544

Republic Waste Services will begin providing curbside recycling collection for every Township resident. There will be no need for residents to subscribe or pre-pay for service. Residents will receive a recycle bin.

Yard Waste collection remains the same.

Yard Waste will still be collected separately on the same day as refuse and recycling. Remember it is state law that all compost material be separated from refuse. Yard waste may be placed in a trashcan clearly marked “yard waste” or placed in kraft paper yard waste bags. Remember that cans or bags may not exceed 32 gallons in size or 50 lbs in weight.

New Service Day!

Some residents within the Township will experience a change in their trash collection day. There will be signs posted on major streets indicating which day collection will occur for that specific area. Residents will also receive information with their new Cart regarding their new trash collection day.

General Recommendations

  • All household refuse/garbage items may be placed in the cart. It is also recommended that garbage items be bagged and tied, then deposited in your cart. This practice will keep your cart cleaner.
  • Please place the cart at least 4 feet from any tree, pole, fire hydrant, etc. and at least 10 feet away from any cars parked in the street so the automated arm can reach your cart.
  • Do not over load the container. If the lid is not closed, garbage will be subject to wind and nuisanceanimals.
  • Please do not lean anything against the container.
  • Remember to place the arrows on the lid of the container toward the street and the handle toward the house.
  • Your container should be placed curbside no later than 7:00 a.m. the day of collection. The emptied container should then be promptly removed from the curbside.
  • The emptying of your Curb Cart is guaranteed ONLY if placed curbside on the correct day and time.
  • Yard waste and any household hazardous waste must NOT be placed in the cart. State law requires that we do not mix yard waste, which is compost , in the cart with garbage.
  • Do not put dirt, sod, or rock in the container.
  • Do not put flammable material such as oil, gas, paint or “hot ashes” or “coals” in the cart.
  • Do not put Muriatic acid and other pool supplies/chemicals in the cart. These can cause chemical reactions in your cart and in our trucks leading to fires and dangerous toxic fumes.
  • Do not put concrete, debris from construction, remodeling or demolition in the cart.

Kent Lake Subwatershed Public Meetings in June

There will be two more Public Meetings for Watershed Issues Identification on June 13 th . The first will be held at the Milford Township/Village Hall at 9:00 AM and the second at White Lake Township at 7:00 PM. Residents of Commerce Township are encouraged to attend if they missed the previous public meeting.

Commerce Township Planning Commission Meetings

A hearing was held May 17 th at the request of Woodland Ridge (formerly Windham Development). This is the new subdivision developing just east of Winewood. The developer wanted to eliminate requirements to install a passing lane on the North side of Commerce Road . The Planning Commission “tabled” the issue after hearing comments from the developer and residents. That means nothing will be done to alter the plans for the passing lane unless the developer and the township can work out an alternative plan and bring it back for further consideration by the Planning Commission. Residents voiced their opinion that a passing lane provides both safety and prevention of traffic delays. The developer stated that the area for the passing lane was a wetland and the soil was so bad that the cost of the lane would be $490,000 rather than the $23,000 originally estimated by the original developer. They also said that installing a passing lane would mean re-routing utilities such as water, sewer and cable – possibly causing residents in Lake Sherwood temporary service loss and partial closing of Commerce Road for an extended period of time. Alternatives suggested were widening of Commerce Road on the south side.

There was a public hearing for the Master Plan on May 24 th at the Rich ardson Center . About 100 residents showed up at the hearing. The Master Plan is not an ordinance or zoning – it is just the township’s idea of how property will be developed in the township. Major objections to the new Master Plan were primarily in two areas: the Union Lake Road area, and the Haggerty Corridor (Downtown Development Authority) area near Pontiac Trail. In both cases residents in those areas wanted to limit development near residential areas and promote open space. There was nothing particularly unusual near Lake Sherwood . The area North of Commerce Road across from Woodland Ridge and North of the wetlands and be used similarly to the Woodland Ridge development. The Master Plan may be revised before taking it to the Township Board of Trustees for approval. Copies of the current plan should be available at the township.

Commerce Township Millage Proposals

There will be millage proposals at both the primary and regular elections. The proposals are expected to be for Police, Library, and open space preservation (title yet unknown). The proposed police millage would add more police officers (however not as many as proposed and defeated in past elections). The Library Millage would support residents of Commerce Township use of local libraries in other communities (as there is a possibility West Bloomfield could also discontinue serving our residents). The open space millage would provide for funds to purchase properties when they become available to conserve open spaces. Keep watching the Spinal Column for more details.

Fertilizer

Work has continued at the state level towards a state law to regulate the use of fertilizers. I have attended those meetings as a committee member. The progress has stalled due to disagreements in wording of several sections. However if the draft language should proceed it is likely that areas which have a TMDL (total minimum daily load) limitation for phosphorus, such as the Huron River watershed, will have a ban on phosphorus use in fertilizers. That means other communities in our watershed will also have to eliminate phosphorus.
