Another year of fishing is complete. The Lake Sherwood Annual Fishing Contest results are in! And there are some record catches again this year. How about a 30 inch walleye and a 40 inch pike from Jeff McCollum (recently transferred to South Carolina). It can pay to spend your time standing on the ice rather than cruising around with your shirt off in the summer. It should be noted that both of these fish, as well as all others entered by Jeff in the contest, were returned to the lake. The 30 inch walleye eclipses the previous record by five inches! In any case this is the kind of fish many fisherman dream about!
Also worth discussion is the inclusion of a rock bass entry. Although technically not on the list of species eligible for recognition, there are so few caught, I thought I would include it. In fact, many residents are unaware they exist in our lake. In my ten years on the lake, maybe I've only seen 6 or 7. It will be interesting to see if this small population continues, or like other lakes where zebra mussels are present, their populations decline.
And Jim Zolad, one of the lakes hardest working fishermen, enters the first legal sized smallmouth bass. This is encouraging. And with fish now reaching this size, a naturally reoccurring population is possible. Note: I opted against stocking the only smallmouths available, small 2 -3 inchers this last fall, fearing they were destined to be pike, bass and walleye bait. What we did stock was 1000 nice sized 8 to 10 inch walleye. These fish represent the best stocking class we have introduced into the lake since our efforts began back in 1995.
Keep those Lake Sherwood Fishing Contest entries coming in for 2003. As I have been saying now for quite a few years, knowing what size of fish are coming from our lake certainly helps us determine what supplemental game fish we should be adding. And watching those kids receive their trophies for their entries is always a highlight. Have a great year out on the ice and water!
One last thing. It appears we are going to be conducting a fish survey this coming spring on Lake Sherwood. I am still working out the details, but I believe one of the things fishermen might be asked to do is collect fish scales from fish they catch while taking measurements of the fish. Anyone interested in helping in this regard (or other ways not yet known), please give me a call, or better yet email me (click here) and I will keep you abreast of our plans.
